Mullaperiyar dam is located in the Cardamom hills 300 feet above m.s.L of western Ghats Thekkadi district of Idukki in Kerala. British Government was contracted this dam in 1895 across the river periyar exactly the confluence of the Mullayar and Periyar rivers so the name of the dam also driven from this two rivers.

The periyar river origin from Sivagiri Hills in the Western Ghats. Comes and join with the Mullaiyar near by the Thekkady. Around the Mullaperiyar reservoier The Periyar National Park is located (Periyar National Park Thekkady).

Tamilnadu government is undertaken the maintained for this dam base on the 999 years lease. Tamil nadu govrnment gerates the Hidro electricity from the diverted waters the down strams of the river water following the major five discricts (Alappuzha, Idukki, Trissur, Ernakulam, Kottayam,) of kerala state also river diverted eastwards to Tamilnadu using the tunnel up to 16km to s the river of Vaigai dam.also this river goes northwestward in to Idukki Dam and then Cheruthon dam and Kulamavu dam. the water flows northwest side to Vembanad lake at Kochi then join the Arabian sea near the Munambam. Main of the dam is to avoid the water west-flowing eastwards.
