About Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve
Kalakkad Mundanthurai KMTR Is situated in the south western gates in tirunelveli District , south India , Tamil nadu , India. This are is second largest protected area in sate of tamilnadu , Mainly East of this mountain village all other sides are only forest area. This is one of the biodiversity hot spot among the 18. also this forest is the third highest peek in south India . Agasthiarmalai and Agasthiarfalls is started from this forest only. Very cool climate and the longest raining season is only from this Western Ghats about 8 months . in 1988 Kalakad 251 km sqr and Mundanthurai Wildlife Sanctuary 567 km sqr ,also this forms inter-state tamilnadiu and kerela.
Western Ghats is the orgin for the 14 rivers and streams Tambraparani river, Manimuthar, Kodaiyar, Pachayar, Karayar, Servalar, Kadnar etc ..
Kalakkad Mundanthurai is mainly reserved forest for tiger in tirunelveli district declared Tiger Sanctuary in 1962 . this is the seventeenth Tiger Reserve in the country.In 1988-89 its created. Kalakad mundanthurai comprises of 665 sq. km Reserved Forest
From the forest The Mammals are Tiger, Leopard, Jungle Cat, Wild Dog, Elephant, Gaur, Chital Mouse Deer, Wild Pig, Lion tailed Macaque, Common Langur, Crocodile Slender loris, Sloth Bear, these are the Mammals.
And the bird types: Great Pied hornbill, Malabar Grey hornbill, Ceylon mouth frog, Great Pied hornbill , etc..
And the Reptiles: Monitor Lizard, Flying Lizard, King Cobra, Python, etc..
Medical plants: over 150 ha planted . Tulsi, Hibiscus, Vilvam, also they can distributed the plants as fee of cost.
For tourism: the forest department maintain some dormitory style cottage this cottage having tow rooms and one rest room. You can reach this room by jeep , on the way of this room having tow sides forest trees and beautiful to see. Parking space available there. Near by the house you can see the river this is the good place to stay night with very good experience, can get the good south Indian foods ,
